South Australia offers thoroughbred racing, harness racing and greyhound racing. More than 81% of all wagering occurs at the off-course TAB agencies. The racing industry is overseen by the Independent Gaming Authority and the Office of Gambling and Liquor Commissioner. Thoroughbred Racing SA is the controlling body for horse racing in South Australia. Greyhound Racing SA Limited is the controlling body for greyhound racing in SA.

There are over 300 TAB outlets, more than 30 racing clubs and over 30 bookmakers.

In November 2008, South Australia amended the Authorized Betting Operations Act 2000 to provide relief to the racing industry. The amendment eliminates some of the fees charged to wagering operators for accepting interstate wagers.
