Electronic gaming machines are permitted in hotels and clubs through the Gaming Machine Act 1992. Gaming machine license holders may have up to 40 machines per licensed premise.
In December 2004, the Gaming Machines Amendment Bill 2004 was ed, calling for the removal of 3,000 gaming machines as part of the state government's effort to reduce problem gambling. In July 2005 this bill went into effect, and a large number of poker machines were switched off.
